Heian Jingu Shrine was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the relocation of the capital to Heian-kyo in Kyoto, and is dedicated to Emperor Kanmu, the first emperor of the period when Kyoto was the capital, and Emperor Komei, the last emperor.
